The Verve Bittersweet Symphony
Thursday, July 17th, 2008
“Bittersweet Symphony” is a hit single by the English band The Verve, featured on their third album Urban Hymns (released in 1997). “Bittersweet Symphony” was the first and most popular single from the album, managing to snag the number two spot on the UK Singles Chart.
“Bittersweet Symphony” was a controversial song at the time as it sampled a song done by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, a cover of The Rolling Stones song “The Last Time”. It was successfully argued in court that The Verve had used too much of the song in their own rendition, however, and the rights to “Bittersweet Symphony” eventually reverted to ABKCO Records (the company that owned the rights to most Rolling Stones music from the 1960’s). Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were granted songwriting credits for the song.
Most recently Coldplay did a live cover of “Bittersweet Symphony”, inviting Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft to play with them on stage.
Lyrics:
Cause it’s a bitter sweet symphony this life…
Trying to make ends meet, you’re a slave to the money then you die.
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down…
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.
No change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change,
but I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
But I’m a million different people from one day to the next…
I can’t change my mold, no,no,no,no,no,no,no
Well I’ve never prayed,
But tonight I’m on my knees, yeah.
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah.
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now.
But the airwaves are clean and there’s nobody singing to me now.
No change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change,
but I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
And I’m a million different people from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold, no,no,no,no,no
Have you ever been down?
I can’t change, I can’t change…
Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony this life.
Trying to make ends meet, trying to find somebody then you die.
You know I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change
but I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
And I’m a million different people from one day to the next.
///I can’t change my mold, no,no,no,no,no///
